For other fiend types, 'Daemons resemble both devils and demons, and they will associate with either for their own purposes.' Said purposes are not generally detailed. The Monster Manual 2 describes a power-based hierarchy ('each race dominated by its strongest and most intelligent member'.'the strongest daemon, the oinodaemon, rules all') and conditional toleration of alliances: 'Daemons do not like service to weaker beings, but given a strong, evil leader and a sufficient reward, they may enter into an alliance, making themselves the superior partner.' Both that and the mezzodaemon discussion are generally in the context of mortal summoners. It does mention their desire for rewards but that's common for 1e fiends.īeyond that it's light on detail - nycadaemons are described in Fiend Folio as 'wicked and domineering', 'acting in an intelligent and carefully calculated manner aimed at maximising personal power and safety.' Mezzodaemons 'enjoy wreaking havoc' on the Prime Material and 'are willing to associate with evil humans and the like if the price is right and their 'superior' position is generally recognized.' Text about daemons in 1e emphasizes their willingness to work with either demons or devils, but they're not explicitly mercenaries.
